Considering the size of the United States, it is obvious that there is more than one time zone, and if you want to know the exact number, it is nine. There are nine standard time zones in America, and here is a list from east to west… First we have the Atlantic Standard Time which is also called AST, then Easter Standard Time (EST), followed by the Central Standard Time (CST), Mountain Standard Time (MST), and then we have the Pacific Standard Time (PST), Alaskan Standard Time (AKST), then moving on it is Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST), and two more: Samoa Standard Time (UTC-11) and of course Chamorro Standard time (UTC+10).
In the United States the daylight saving time always begins at 2 AM, on the second Sunday in March local time. That goes until the first Sunday in November in these areas. Then you have to return the time to 2 AM. That means that the time zones change their names during this period of the year, so EST is going to become EDT – Eastern Daylight Time, and so on… But, not every part of the States observes Daylight Saving Time. That goes for Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa.
On the US time zones map you are going to notice that there are four main areas when it comes to the time difference: Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern time zone. Since Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone, they don’t observe daylight saving time, except in one part of the country, Navajo Indian Nation. Americans got used to the time zones, and mainly they are paying attention to the time difference between the East and West coast, and that is what matters the most to them.
When it is 10 PM in Hawaii, it is 11 PM in Alaska, 12 AM in Pacific, 1 AM in the Mountain area, 2 AM in the central region of the States, and 3 AM in the East coast, and that is what you have to know about the time zones in the USA! It looks a little bit complicated, but it is actually very simple. The research has shown that many people from other parts of the world, like Europe for example know a lot more about the time zones in the States, than the people who live there all their lives.
Even though there are 9 time zones in America, that doesn’t mean that this is the country with the biggest number of time zones. It is definitely Russia with 11 time zones, which is very interesting considering the fact that China is the largest country in the world. These are only some of the interesting facts about the time zones. In some parts of the world, there is even 15 or 30 minutes difference in the same country like in India and Nepal for example, and of course Russia.
